Abstract
Claustrophobia can be a contraindication for patients undergoing MRI scans. This review investigated distraction and relaxation techniques for overcoming claustrophobia during MRI scans through scientific literature available on PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Thirty peer-reviewed articles were selected, which highlighted an improvement in the tolerability of the examination through the use of music, virtual reality, relaxation techniques, patient reassurance, pet therapy, and aromatherapy. The purpose of this review is to identify new and/or proven strategies that do not require the use of anesthetic drugs to reduce patient anxiety related to MRI examinations.
