Abstract
The paper is a systematic literature review examining the scientific evidence for functional physical training (FPT) — an approach based on multi-joint, multi-planar movements that replicate real-life and sport motor patterns, as opposed to traditional machine-based isolation exercises.
Methods: 45 studies were selected from 150 initial citations (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library; 2000–2023), following PRISMA guidelines. Methodological quality was assessed via the PEDro scale (mean score 5.8/10, indicating moderate-to-good quality). Due to high heterogeneity, formal meta-analysis was not performed; a structured narrative synthesis was used instead.
Key findings across six outcome domains:
- Sprint speed: ~5% improvement over 100 m in athletes (vs. 2% in controls)
- Balance: 20% greater improvement in older adults compared to traditional exercise, with significant clinical implications for fall prevention
- Body composition: ~3% reduction in fat mass and ~4% increase in lean mass in sedentary overweight adults over 12 weeks
- Agility: ~15% improvement on standardised tests (T-test, Illinois) in football players
- Muscular strength: ~10% increase in deadlift strength from kettlebell-based protocols, with good transfer to functionally relevant tasks
- Muscular endurance: Superior improvements (35% in push-ups, 48% in plank time) compared to traditional resistance training
Limitations acknowledged: variable definition of "functional training" across studies; heterogeneous comparator groups; short follow-up periods (mostly 8–12 weeks); limited data on long-term adherence, adverse events, and non-Western populations.
Conclusions: The evidence supports FPT as an effective and versatile modality for athletes, older adults, and general populations. The authors call for higher-quality RCTs with longer follow-up, mechanistic studies, and implementation research for public health translation.
