Speech and language therapists in Sicily: findings from the third regional census

Abstract

Background: The “Census of Speech and Language Therapists in Sicily – 3rd Edition 2025” is a regional monitoring and research initiative promoted by the Board of Speech and Language Therapists of the TSRM-PSTRP Order of Palermo, in collaboration with all regional Speech and Language Therapy Boards. The project aims to provide an updated and representative overview of the profession in Sicily, focusing on demographic, educational, occupational, and organizational aspects.

Methods: The survey was conducted through a structured questionnaire developed using Google Forms, selected for its accessibility, ease of use, and wide digital dissemination. The questionnaire was distributed through the institutional channels of the regional professional boards, ensuring extensive coverage across Sicily.

Results: The census highlights substantial stability compared to previous editions, with approximately 83% of speech and language therapists currently employed. Employment is mainly concentrated in private and private accredited healthcare facilities, while positions within the public healthcare system remain limited. Most professionals graduated from Sicilian universities, confirming their central educational role. Furthermore, a high proportion of respondents reported postgraduate education, reflecting growing interest in specialization and continuous professional development.

Discussion: The findings confirm the progressive consolidation of the speech and language therapy profession in Sicily, highlighting high employability and strong academic preparation. However, the limited integration within the public healthcare system suggests the need for targeted workforce planning and policy interventions. The collected data represent a valuable strategic resource for healthcare, academic, and professional institutions, providing useful insights for the planning of future educational, employment, and organizational policies.
